Term 3 school holiday workshops at Scitech

Everything you need to know to book tickets to our upcoming school holiday workshops held at Scitech!

imagex0vis.png

We're excited to be back at Scitech at the next school holidays to deliver an even bigger program of hands-on science and health workshops just for kids!

School may be out, but not for the most curious kids! Our popular workshops are back in the September/October school holidays at our new base, the Scitech Lab. We’ve got a jam-packed program these holidays – including a return of some of your favourite topics, such as ‘Germs’ and ‘Poo and You’ – as well as the launch of a brand-new workshop, ‘Build a Virus’.

Each workshop runs for 1-hour and costs $20 per child ($15 for Scitech members), with morning sessions suitable for younger children and afternoon sessions suitable for older kids. All workshop tickets include entry to Scitech’s interactive exhibition space, which you can explore after the workshop. Our workshops are delivered by real-life The Kids researchers, who will bring the science and health topics to life through fun games, exciting experiments and hands-on activities.

Be the first to know when school holiday workshops are released in the future by signing up to our Discovery Centre mailing list.

Dates: Tuesday 27th September to Thursday 6th October
Location: Scitech, City West Centre, Corner Railway Street & Sutherland Street, West Perth WA 6005

Power of Our Lungs

Our lungs do a lot of amazing things for our bodies, including allowing us to breathe. In this workshop, you will get to build and take home your very own lung model to learn about how our lungs work. You’ll also get to make some gooey slime to investigate how scientists are trying to stop slime from damaging the lungs of kids with chronic respiratory illnesses.

Suitable for ages 5 - 9 years old.

Dates: Wednesday 28th September, 10.00 - 11.00am | Tuesday 4th October, 10.00 - 11.00am | Tuesday 4th October, 11.30 - 12.30pm

Germs!

Think like a scientist and prepare a simple science experiment where you can grow germs on slices of bread. You’ll get to continue your experiment at home to watch the germs grow! Then discover the power of soap and the importance of washing your hands in the fight against germs by conducting a soapy magic trick.

Suitable for ages 5 - 9 years old.

Term 3 Workshops - Ear Explorers (1300 x 730px).jpg

Ear Explorers

Let’s go on an adventure to explore the inner workings of our ears! Use everyday materials to create a large-scale ear model and investigate how we use our ears to hear. Investigate how sound waves travel through the ear to the cochlea and vibrate to transfer sound to your brain. Then put your listening skills to the test to see how correctly you can guess what’s inside the noisemakers.

Suitable for ages 5 - 9 years old.

Dates: Friday 30th September, 10.00 - 11.00am | Wednesday 5th October, 10.00 - 11.00am

Brainy Circuits

Ouch! You just touched a hot pan, but how did you know your finger was hot? Learn about the information highway that controls everything you do in this practical workshop about the brain and the nervous system. Create a simple circuit using playdough to investigate how electrical impulses travel through a neuron.

Suitable for children aged 9 – 12 years old.

Date: Tuesday 27th September, 2.00 - 3.00pm | Thursday 6th October, 2.00 - 3.00pm

DNA Code Crackers

Are you a master DNA code cracker? Discover the unique set of instructions written in the four chemical letters that make up your DNA. Use your thinking and see how quickly you can decode sequences of DNA into their protein sequences. At the end of the workshop, you’ll also get to create and take home a bracelet or keyring with your name in DNA code!

Suitable for children aged 9 – 12 years old.

Dates: Thursday 29th September, 2.00 - 3.00pm | Monday 3rd October, 2.00 - 3.00pm

Get Your Heart Pumping

Your heart supplies blood and oxygen to the rest of your body and is the centre of your circulatory system. Investigate how this muscular organ does its job and helps you move in this hands-on workshop where you’ll get to make a heart model that can actually pump blood! Learn about the importance of exercise for healthy hearts and have a go at measuring your pulse rate.

Suitable for children aged 9 – 12 years old.

Build a Virus

How much do you know about viruses? Our researchers will guide you to discover the ins and outs of viruses in this fun workshop where you’ll get to design and make your very own virus model. What shape will your virus be? Will it have any protein spikes? Will it be enveloped or non-enveloped? You’ll also get to take your virus home!

Suitable for children aged 9 – 12 years old.
