Collaboration for the kids

How do you brighten the day of kids in the Perth Children's Hospital when you can't visit them? You work with other sparkly and generous people to build something amazing for the kids!

As COVID-19 restrictions temporarily changed the way we interacted with patients, the The Kids Discovery Centre collaborated with the Starlight Children's Foundation to create a dynamic “3D Interactive Science and Space” artwork in the hospital.

Over May and June 2020, the artwork was built in the Starlight Express Room and featured our researchers and lab tools. It was transformed into many different fun forms and featured on Starlight TV.

Patients in the hospital could engage by contacting Captain Starlight to suggest how the Science and Space artwork could be transformed, giving them choice and control from their hospital beds. New items were continually added to the ever changing installation in response to questions that the kids were asked. Challenges put to the patients were to help Captain Starlight to build a rocket ship control system and science lab.

190 science and craft activity kits were distributed to patients in the hospital who wanted to discover more, plus tutorials were run daily on Starlight TV.

The Kids was thrilled to have been part of this unique venture and we just loved working with the Starlight Children’s Foundation creative team to benefit kids.
